As I sit here in a park, hearing a child say to his Mom “Mama, can I eat this?” – a question that has become quite common these days, I’m reminded exactly why I felt compelled to write “Hiba’s Egg Allergy” with my wonderful co-author, Hikmot. Our journey to writing this book has been quite the adventure, one that ultimately led to this heartfelt project that I’m excited to share with you.
I remember the day Hikmot and I first discussed this project. We were sharing our experiences as mothers and reflecting on how children’s literature often lacks stories that Muslim kids with allergies can relate to.
We wanted to create something special – a book that would serve as both a mirror for children with allergies and a window for those without, all while weaving in the concept of trusting in Allah’s divine decree.
What Inspired Hiba?
In creating Hiba’s character, I drew inspiration from the resilience I’ve witnessed in many children I have met. Hiba is not just a character in this book; she represents every child who has ever felt different because of their allergies or any other challenge. Her curiosity, her initial struggles, and her journey to understanding Allah’s wisdom reflect the real experiences of so many children in our community.
Why is This Book Special?
What makes this book particularly special to me is how it approaches the concept of Al-Qadr in a way that young minds can grasp. Through Hiba’s story, children learn that everything – yes, even egg allergies – happens for a reason. As Hiba manoeuvres birthday parties, school lunches, and family gatherings, she discovers that her challenge is actually leading her to develop amazing qualities like responsibility, empathy, and tawakkul (trust in Allah).
Hikmot and I spent countless hours ensuring that every page, every illustration, and every word would resonate with both parents and children. We wanted to create those precious moments where families can snuggle up together, read, and have meaningful conversations about faith, challenges, and the beautiful way Allah’s plan unfolds in our lives.
One of the most rewarding aspects of writing this book has been hearing from parents whose children finally feel seen and understood. There’s nothing quite like receiving a message from a mother saying, “My child hugged your book and said, ‘Mama, Hiba is just like me!'” These moments remind me exactly why we needed to write this story.
And you know, as Muslim parents, we all want to raise children who are strong in their faith and resilient in face of challenges. When our children understand that everything happens by Allah’s decree, they’re better equipped to face any challenge that comes their way, whether it’s allergies or anything else life presents.
My Hope
My hope is that this book becomes more than just a story in your home. I pray it becomes a tool for family discussions, a source of comfort for children with allergies, and a gentle reminder that Allah’s plan is always perfect, even when we don’t understand it right away.
When your child reads about Hiba’s journey, I hope they find strength in knowing they’re not alone, and that they develop a deeper understanding of how every challenge can bring them closer to Allah.
Remember, dear parents, every time you read an Islamic book with your little ones, you’re not just sharing a story – you’re helping them build a foundation of faith that will serve them well into adulthood. And isn’t that the greatest gift we can give our children?
And guess what? This book is now available on Amazon! 🥰
